Week 6 Carbon Cycle Homework Due WB 7th November 2024

Task 1:

Adaptation is when you make changes to the way something works e.g climate change will mean large

places around the world will suffer from water droughts and therefore a adaptation to this would be to save more water also known as water conservation some benifits of this include less ectraction of ground water from aquafers and therefore less damage to the enviroment however some drawbacks include it not being effecient and conservative enough to supply high water demand when necessary e.g after a drought.
other form of adaptation might include:
  • land use planning
  • flood management
  • use of abnorman energy
  • solar radiation management

Mitigation is when you try to prevent the problem it self from happening in the

first place or reverse the things done back to normal. One example of this would be the proper use of carbon taxation this would allow us to tax richer people more as the wealthier on the society are the one who use the most carbon this would mean a incentive to go carbon neutral therefore more renewable energy might be used. e.g due to higher tax in petrol and diesel car in Norway in august of 2024 they only sold 43 fossil fuel cars and most of the countries transport is electric and powered by hydro.

other form of mitigation include:

  • renewable source of energy e.g biofuel
  • energy effeciency
  • afforestation
  • CCS technology( the UK has plesed to spend £22 billion in ccs in the coming future)

Task 2:
How have growing humans impacted on the Amazon Basin carbon and water cycles?

Growing humans have impacted on amazon basin carbon and water cycle through deforestation for resources such as wood and the land was used to grow cows this ment trees wouldnt capture as much carbon as before and furthermore this would lead to water contamination from cows feases going into the surrounding water.

Why is deforestation in the Amazon such a big issue for carbon balance and tipping points? How does this like to the Kuznets curve?

deforestation is amazon is a big issue as it is one of the most diverse forest in the world and absorbs a bunch of carbon from the atmosphere causing a carbon balance how ever deforestation has caused more carbon to be present in the atmosphere and leat to a knock on effect which could lead to catastrophic damage.
it links to Kuznets curve by showing us that after the top there is a downhill trend.
